Spitting Image: Siren

9418f9151d014e9eea34072c035b3916--tim-burton-lisa-marieOne of the best parts about being an avid convention goer is that they tend to burn a fire under my ass to complete back burner pieces on my art bucket list. My next piece is no exception. When I heard that Lisa Marie Smith was added as a guest for an upcoming con we will be attending, I knew it was time to finally finish the portrait I had been wanting to do of her.

Although Lisa was a world–renowned model, I first heard of her when she was married to Tim Burton and starring in his movies. I never stopped admiring her work even after their split. I have always found her to be beautiful but I also find her rather fascinating. I think it’s incredible the way she can bring life to a character with very little dialogue. A silent movie actress of our time. That is why I chose to call this split face portrait “Siren”….

Siren Logo.jpg

Half of the portrait is of Lisa as the Lady Martian in Mars Attacks because its one of my all time favorite movies. The other half is a representation of herself and a little bit of Lady Crane in Sleepy Hollow.

Prints and t-shirts are available in both my Etsy and Amazon shops! You can also see more of my portrait work on the Spitting Image page of my website.

Creature Feature: I’m Your Jessica Now Morty

0

So when I saw a post that Hot Topic was teaming up with We Love Fine for a Rick and Morty T-Shirt Contest my brain went into over drive with ideas. Anyone that knows myself and my husband know how much we love Rick and Morty. My first thought was I probably can’t enter because I do all my art with my hands and not a computer program. This is the dead end I run into quite often (that and you can’t enter unless you have Facebook). However these people are killer and are actually accepting hand drawn art! That alone was enough to get me to enter.

47de4c355d816e5e31fbdc4502ba53c37d69fb6a_hqMy main goal was to make the piece be very Rick & Morty with a spin from my creepy side. I knew if I did that it would really represent me as an artist. That is when it hit me… Scary Terry! Then from there I went for a modern day technology spin on a very popular horror movie scene and the rest is history.

If you’re a hardcore Nightmare on Elm Street and Rick and Morty fan you will understand the concept and also why I decided to call my entry “I’m Your Jessica Now Morty!” I sketched it out in pencil, outlined it in ink and then colored it with Prisma Color Colored pencils and chalk pastels. It was then scanned into the computer to submit it. I personally would rock the hell out of it as a t-shirt.

im your jessica now
Now this is where my Freaky Fanatics come in. I need your help (again…I know, but us artists have to get exposure somehow right?). So anyways here is what I need you to do. I need you to go to my assigned contest entry link and vote for my entry and then SHARE the crap out of it all over social media asking your connections to do the same.

Here is the direct link to use and share:
https://community.welovefine.com/m/contests/designs/Rick-and-Morty-Design-Contest/list/id-46362

Feel free to re-blog this post as well. The more exposure it gets the better! They have judges for this contest but they are looking for the public to also rate the entries to get an idea on who would buy the artwork concept on a shirt. It will weigh heavily on who wins. So please take the time to rate my entry and it would look even better if you left some supportive comment love on the entry as well.

Spitting Image: Memorial Portrait – Possum

5

1961586_217896621733096_1825452114_nTom (a past customer of mine) contacted me recently asking if I can do another portrait for him. I had drawn a memorial portrait of his niece, Audra 4 years ago and he said he immediately thought of me when he decided to have a 2nd memorial portrait done. This time it would be of his pet wolf named Possum. I was honored he came back to have me do yet another meaningful piece and after seeing photographs of his unique and captivating pet, I became instantly excited to work on it. After finishing the portrait the other night I emailed Tom the first draft. I couldn’t be happier when I saw his response in my inbox. It said….”I LOVE IT!”

Last night I put a protective spray on the portrait and tonight I am getting it ready to ship out. I can’t wait to hear what Tom thinks of it when he sees it in person.

Memorial portraits are a wonderful way to pay tribute and keep the memory alive of someone we love. I hope that this portrait of Possum brings some peace to Tom during this time and he can look at it and think back of all the wonderful times he spent with his beloved pet.

Spitting Image: Naturally Born Bad

0

I have so many portraits on my “art bucket list” and this one was one that was well over due. I call this one “Naturally Born Bad”. It is of Juliette Lewis portraying Mallory Knox in Natural Born Killers.

Mallory is one of my favorite crazy flick chic characters and Juliette is someone I admire. She is so talented and seems like she would be an all around killer person to hang out with.  I feel like she’s the type of person that if you are around her there would never be a dull moment. I guess you can say the same thing would probably go if you were Mallory’s friend too ha ha.

Many know she is a successful actress but not as many people know she is also a very talented musician as well. I am often seen rocking my Juliette Lewis and the Licks mugshot shirt because its one of my favorite shirts in my entire wardrobe.

My husband Frank and I actually had the honor of meeting her dad 10 years ago (God rest his soul) back at a Devil’s Rejects Con Event. Such an honor to meet a legend.

Geoffrey Lewis

If you have seen Natural Born Killers then you know the reason I found snakes a rather fitting addition for this piece. I especially wanted them wrapping around her in a way that was somewhat similar to the rings that her and Mickey exchange on their wedding day.  I also used psychedelic background colors using pastels inspired by the movie as well as the Director’s Cut DVD cover.

Overall I am really happy how it came out. Right now the original is not for sale. I hope one day I am able to meet and give it to her. A girl can dream right?!  Her band will be at the upcoming Riot Fest but unfortunately fest tickets are not in our budget right now. I am hoping she tours back again to Chicago on their own so I can finally see them live and maybe by chance give it to her. She isn’t really known to do cons so that would probably be my best opportunity (if any) to try to give it to her. Even if it’s a long shot.

Don’t fret though. I always think of my Freaky Fanatics. That is why prints are available in my Etsy shop!

Spitting Image: The Only One That Saves Me. Is Me.

0

This ice storm has got me indoors and productive. I just finished a portrait that I started before the holidays. It is of Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan from Once Upon A Time. As you all know I have quite the obsession with horror movies and fantasy related movies and TV shows. Fantasy also being anything that has to do with fairy tales. I have mentioned before with my Kristin Bauer art posts that I am quite the fan of Once Upon a Time. My inspiration for this piece is due to my love for Emma’s  strong character on the show. I feel Jennifer does an amazing job portraying Emma and brings magic to the role. She is a character who has gone through so much but in reality it has made her a stronger person. I feel like I can relate to that in many ways. Jennifer is also from Illinois so I am praying one day she might grace her beautiful presence back here in Chicago and do a meet and greet at Comicon or some other event so I can give it to her. A girl can hope.

This piece is another one of my split face portraits and half of her is Emma the Savior and the other half is Emma as the Dark One. It was done in pencil and the background was done in water color colored pencil.

“People are gonna tell you who you are your whole life. You just gotta punch back and say, “No, this is who I am”. You want people to look at you differently? Make them! You want to change things, you’re gonna have to go out there and change them yourself, because there are no fairy godmothers in this world.”
– Emma Swan
