Backbone: Win My Handmade Creations At Trish’s Breast Cancer Benefit This Weekend!

4

From either personally knowing me or reading my posts it is obvious that breast cancer is something that has personally effected my life in a dramatic way. With my Mom passing away from the disease when I was 10 it has had a huge impact on me in ways I can not even begin to explain. Being 35 (the age she was when she was diagnosed), having a recent scare of my own and her birthday coming up this Saturday it is easy to say that the thought of breast cancer is pretty fresh in my mind these days.

trishHowever it is also on my mind because my friend Trish is fighting the same battle my Mom did. Just like her she is fighting this at a young age while raising raising 2 beautiful children. She continues to be an inspiration to everyone with her positive “I’m gonna kick this cancer’s ass” attitude!

When I heard they were having a benefit for her I had to find a way to help. One glance at the Back Bone page of my portfolio it’s pretty obvious that I enjoy using my artistic skills to help great causes. Especially after facing my own serious health scares and seeing how people pulled together to help me get through them. It’s scary enough to have something so serious effecting you physically and yet trying not to stress over the cost it all takes to get well. The help of others made a huge impact on my recovery. I urge you to come out and support this strong amazing woman and her family. From my own personal experience I can tell you that every bit counts!

With that I made a basket of my handmade creations that I am donating. It will be a part of the prizes raffled off this Sunday, July 24th at Evil Horse Brewery in Crete IL from 2- 5pm! So if you ever wanted to get your hands on some of my creations now you can attend a fun event, buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win a whole basket of them all while helping a great cause!

Back Bone: Win Monstrous Prizes + Support Scares That Care

4

I am so happy to announce that I have teamed up with one of the most amazing foundations……… Scares That Care!

scaresthatcare

Scares That Care is an approved 501(c)(3) who fights the REAL MONSTERS of childhood illness, burns and breast cancer by helping families that are experiencing these extraordinary hardships cope with the financial burden. Our non-profit organization provides money, toys and other items to help sick children. We have two other programs consisting of “Scares For Pairs,” where we help women fighting breast cancer and partnered with horror icon Kane Hodder for the “I Helped Kane” program, where we provide assistance to those children who have suffered serious burn injuries. We are a 100% VOLUNTEER organization in order to maximize our supporters donations to those who need it!

I have donated a $25 Gift Certificate for my Etsy Shop as a raffle prize for their March $5 donation day!  Besides my gift certificate there are lots of other monstrous themed prizes being added! For every $5.00 donated, a number will be assigned. $5.00 would equal one number, $15.00 would equal three numbers, $25.00 would equal five numbers, and so on. At the end of the donation drive, they will select random numbers and contact those people to pick their prize!

As someone who has had to start a GoFundMe for help during my own medical crisis and someone who has grown up watching their mother lose their battle to breast cancer, I personally feel a strong connection with this foundation and everything they stand for. Not to mention the theme of their foundation is a perfect match for someone like me to team up with. I mean come on… look at that logo!

It could not come at a better time either. I have actually been in talks with the foundation since earlier this month. I just turned 35 last Friday. The same age my Mom was when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. It has made this birthday a difficult one that I actually was not looking forward to. Most people are not anticipating their birthdays because it makes them feel older. This birthday is a harsh reminder of just how young my Mom was and how short of a life she was given. It may not come off that way with all my fun “I met Henry Rollins Birthday posts“, however mentally it is something I have been thinking about constantly over the past year. A countdown of sorts to things becoming more real. Thankfully my husband was able to give my brother and myself a memorable moment we are able to look back on together. I also still think the way it all fell into place for us was my Mom’s doing somehow. Up there pulling strings.

With us no longer struggling with medical expenses, it feels only right to help give back to others that still are. It’s funny how things work out too. My donation worked out to be a better fit for their March donation day instead of February. It just so happens to fall 2 days after the anniversary of my Mom’s passing. So as I do this to help others, I do it in her memory as well.

So I ask of you.. please spread the word about this special event taking place on March 18th. Anyone can participate too! Just go HERE and read all about the donation day and how you can donate via their store, via Pay Pal or even snail mail! If you can not participate PLEASE spread the word! That helps more then you know!

Back Bone: Donating Some Magic

0

I did some major bedroom cleaning/rearranging this weekend to prepare for our Yogabed to arrive this week. My back is still hating me. Hate me as it will… it lead to 3 bags of donations for good will and more……

I was talking to my friend Heather about it all and told her how I also have all these high school dance dresses and bridesmaids dresses that I no longer can wear that I would like to donate but don’t want them ending in a pile of donations never to be seen by someone that could really use them. Or smashed in a garbage bag on my back porch waiting to be picked up and throw in the back of a truck. So many memories and meaning comes from each of them that it sort of broke my heart thinking about it. Hence why they are still in my closet. I told her how I had looked into some of the Prom dress donation websites but I had more then just prom dresses. I had stuff I wore to Homecoming and Turnabout as well. Short dresses that would not qualify and others that might be considered out dated by some of the charities even though the styles I wore were pretty timeless.

That is when Heather came up with an insanely AWESOME idea! She asked if I would be down to donate them to her friend, Emily who is the head of the drama department at a high school. She told me not only could they be used for some of their theatrical performances but also some girls who don’t have a lot come to her friend when they need dance dresses because they can not afford them. She also informed me that Emily does all the fundraising for the drama dept and a lot of times they are in dire need of items. My heart smiled! It was no longer hard to let go of these memorable pieces of clothing. I knew just from hearing this that this is where they belong! As one artist to another I know Emily will reuse these dresses and make someone feel magical all over again. Emily is insanely talented with a heart of gold! 🙂

When Emily saw the photos of the dresses she told Heather “It’s like Christmas!” and when she saw my old pink prom dress (I always referred to as Glinda meets Clueless) she was stoked. She is doing a production of the Wizard of Oz! This made me especially happy because this dress is the hardest for me to part with because it holds a lot of meaning to me. Not only because it was one of my prom dresses from the year I was on prom court, but because I specifically wore pink in memory of my Mom who passed away from breast cancer and always told me she liked me in pink when I was a kid. She might not have been able to be there to help me pick the dress out, do my hair and makeup with me, take photos with me etc. so this was my way of sharing that special moment with her. To know this dress will be used in such a artistic, memorable way just makes me so incredibly happy. It literally brings a tear to my eye. I know Emily can take that dress and turn it into something unbelievable.

Some of the others that are hard to part with are the dresses I wore to dances and prom my senior year when I was dating my husband, Frank. Just knowing those will either make another young girl happy or be used on one of the stars of her plays just makes me that more excited to donate them.

After hearing the drama dept was in need of items I also went through some of my old costumes that I have worn for Halloween and past photo shoots (back in my ole alternative modeling days).

Last night I reminisced about the dances I went to, the weddings I stood up in and the fun Halloween parties and photo shoots I took part in as I boxed them all up. It made me smile to know that someone else will get to share that joy!

Back Bone: Help Linda Blair and the Worldheart Foundation

0

As you may have read in some of my past posts or in the Back Bone section of my website that I have helped raise money with my artwork in numerous ways. You may have also read about the items I have created to help raise money for Linda Blair’s Worldheart Foundation. I received a newsletter email from the foundation today reaching out for help. They are currently low on funds and are asking that people help spread the word to get more donations. So because of that I would like to remind everyone about the adorable dog inspired barrettes and pins that I still have available in my Etsy shop. They are currently only $6.00 and every time one is purchased I donate 50% to Linda’s foundation.

I currently have 3 pins and 1 small barrette left for purchase…

Not only is it nice to get a little something when helping a wonderful foundation, but it’s also a wonderful reminder that you did!
